With all the craziness happening in the world right now, it comes as no surprise when we hear that some games that we have been waiting for have been delayed. But, it is very nice when we hear that a delay was not caused by the turmoil, but the opposite instead. SkateBird will be seeing a delay until 2021, but only because things are going super great in the development department.
In a recent Kickstarter update, the developer of Skatebird announced that the release of their game will be pushed back so that there will be time to add a proper story mode, instead of the simple tape collecting that was originally planned.
Megan Fox, developer of Skateboard, also ensured the followers of her game that the delay was just to add improvements, and that there has been no negativity causing the delay. All is well (as well as can be rn) in the development of Skatebird, and the developers aren’t being bogged down by current circumstance any more (or less) than the rest of us.
For those that have not been following, SkateBird is an indie eSports title in the style of classic Tony Hawk games, but with an avian twist. In the game, you play as a little birdie that loves to skate and shred with friends. This title will be released with multiplayer capabilities, and will be coming to the Nintendo Switch (when it is ready).
For more information on Skatebird, you can check out the games page on the official Nintendo website (which is yet to be updated with the new release date).

I have been waiting to get my hands on SkateBIRD for quite some time now. Seeing as how the Tony Hawk franchise is all but destroyed, I have been waiting patiently for a game that has similar mechanics to the original games. Well, now I’ve played SkateBIRD and can say that this tiny hawk is poised to replace the champ of skateboarding themed video games.
(Keep in mind that this is a demo, and the game will be in development until next year.) The game opens with a basic tutorial, easily skippable if you desire. If you played any of the old TH games, you are going to get the feel pretty quickly. All of the controls match closely to what we are already familiar.
I used a Playstation controller, so x to jump, square to flip trick, triangle to grind/stall, and circle to grab. It is recommended that you use a controller for the demo. I took a second to try out the keyboard style, and could see why the controller is strongly recommended. Skateboarding games aren’t too fluid on a keyboard.
After you get the controls down, you are ready to shred. The demo consists of a relatively small map composed of a few choice ramps and benches. The first thing you notice is that playing as a bird comes with a few benefits that humans don’t have. The wings come in to play as you are cruising from place to place, searching for the best combo spots.
I finally found a nice little enclosure of ramps and decided to go nowhere until I mastered the transfer over the entrances. With a little practice, I was easily gliding around the map and racking up points like an old pro. One thing that stood out to me was the over-ease of stalling. Once you reach a 14,000 point combo, the game starts to lose a little challenge. It seems a small detail that will be ironed out in the final product.
I can say with 100% certainty that I will be purchasing SkateBIRD thanks to the demo! It is everything that I wanted to find in a new skating game. There are still a couple bugs to be worked out with certain tricks, but that’s why we play demos. Definitely check it out for yourself now, as it is currently available free to play on Steam until Saturday morning.

My favorite shredding avian is now officially going to be playable on the Nintendo Switch. That’s right, SkateBIRD will be releasing for Nintendo’s newest console sometime late in 2020. The Indie World Showcase revealed numerous gaming goodies, including The Survivalist, an open-world, sandbox, building and survival game from the makers of The Escapists coming to Switch next year.
With the release announcement came a new trailer for the game, which you can view below. Not only that, SkateBIRD now has its own official page on the Nintendo website. On that page you can find an in-depth description of the game, as well as more screenshots. If you would like to keep up Skatebird as it grows, be sure to follow the developer on Twitter.
