Having a campsite in Animal Crossing: New Horizons can be a super aesthetic little addition to your island. As well as the aesthetic value of making a campsite, the process is also fun and therapeutic. With many of us having missed out on our usual summer holidays, having a cozy virtual campsite can somewhat make up for this.
However, you might be needing some inspiration. The many items and customization options available can often be a little overwhelming. Are you looking to change your island up? Maybe after months of gameplay, you don’t have a lot of space and need some smaller campsite ideas?
Wherever you fall, we’ve got you covered with these super cool Animal Crossing: New Horizons campsite ideas. If you’ve not yet built the campsite, the below steps explain how.
How To Unlock The Campsite?
To unlock the campsite, you will first need to:
- Pay off your getaway package debt and upgrade your tent to a house.
- Provide the materials required by the Nooklings to build Nookโs Cranny.
- Build a bridge.
- Craft the required items for three homes and have three new villagers move in.
- After completing these steps, the Residents Services building will be built.
How To Build The Campsite?
After you have upgraded the Residents Services building from a tent to a building, you must do the following:
- Talk to Tom Nook and select the ‘What should I do?’ option twice. This will prompt the tanuki to share his desire for K.K. Slider to visit the island and put on a show. Tom Nook wishes to invite K.K. Slider, however, he wants to build a campsite first.
- Tom Nook will ask for your help in building the campsite and therefore will give you the campsite construction kit recipe .
- Next you must craft the kit at a workbench using 15x iron nuggets, 15x wood, 15x softwood and 15x hardwood.
- After crafting the kit, you need to find a spot to place it. The location you choose will mark where the campsite will be built.
After choosing a spot for the campsite, return to the Residents Services building. Talk with Tom Nook and the building of the campsite will begin. After building the campsiste and unlocking the game’s amiibo feature, you will be able to add and remove residents to your island.

#relatable ๐ Don’t Compare Your Island To Other Players’ & Take Your Time
It can be daunting knowing where to start with any island renovations. It can also be a bit disheartening to see other people’s awesome creations and feel like your own island is lackluster in comparison (I’ve been there!).
However, don’t be disheartened, as ACNH isn’t meant to be stressful! (Although the Bunny Day festivities kinda were, so thanks, Nintendo…)

But back on topic, if you’re dead (like Zipper will be if he ever sets foot on my island again) set on making your airport/island entrance look super cool, then these simple tips will heed you well. Be sure to take all the time you need, plan your island entrance in advance (see below for tools and tips to help), and most importantly, make sure that you do you! ๐
Stay Organized, Make A Map
Planning is an important part of terraforming/landscaping your island. Therefore, like these awesome island maps shown below, you could definitely hand draw your island map, or use digital art software (which would make a nice memento). But it doesn’t even need to be that hard with this Google docs spreadsheet ACNH map creator ๐๐บ๏ธ
See How Your Ideas Look Using A Planner First:
If you
are too busy hunting down that blasted bunny with an axedon’t have the time (or inclination) to hand-draw/create your entire island map, then don’t worry! A handy 3D ACNH island planner is available to download for free on itch.io.Here you can try out terraforming ideas and get an idea of how they’ll look in 3D before committing to paying for that darn bridge, only to have to give Tom Nook more bells to demolish it, yet again! If you own a Chromebook like myself, you may be disappointed to know that the app is only avilable to download on Mac, Windows, and Linux operating systems. Although you can still use the planner in-browser whilst using a Chromebook, which I discovered AFTER using the below method…
You can also use the more simplistic in-browser Happy Island Designer planner here. Whilst unfortunately not 3D, the tool does allow you to plan your island beforehand, instead of getting stuck right in, only to realize that you don’t know where to start.
I found it quite handy to see roughly how my island would look, due to the ability to place trees, flowers, and buildings. Additionally, you can upload a photo or screenshot of your island map layout before starting, something which would’ve saved me a lot of time, had I known beforehand… (Man, I need to do my research)! ๐ Here is my first attempt at using Happy Island Designer:

In previous games, players were limited when decorating their Able Sisters’ exteriors. Pixelated paths were basically the only way of landscaping in Animal Crossing: Wild World. I remember trying to spruce up my Animal Crossing: Wild World shops by using mismatched flowers from Tom Nook. I also remember crudely insulting the tanuki tycoon on the bulletin board, but that’s for another time (and probably another place). But even using flowers to decorate was difficult due to the darn pavement beneath the shops.
Even in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the shopping area was unchangeable. Additionally, players couldn’t curve paths, terraform, or place furniture outside. Therefore the addition of these features to Animal Crossing: new Horizons is what makes the game so attractive.
Players just have so much more freedom and ways to be creative when it comes to exterior design. However, the sudden abundance of tools given to us can be a little daunting. Somehow staring at plain grass doesn’t seem to help inspiration to hit any faster.
Not used to decorating the exteriors of shops in the games, I had no clue where to start. The outside areas of Able Sisters and Nook’s Cranny on my island remained pitifully drab until REALLY recently. Are you in the same boat? It’s true that MyPotatoGames posted an article on things that fans would like to see in the game. However, some of these have now been fulfilled. Additionally, as a few months have passed, players have noticed more things that would make the gameplay experience more enjoyable. Whether it be slight glitches, some multiplayer issues, spontaneous travelling merchants, etc, there are definitely a few more features and improvements that players would like to see.
I took the effort to ask fans what features they would like and improvements that could be made. There’s no denying that the game is extraordinarily entertaining, but take notes Nintendo, as I received hundreds of responses. ๐ Here are some features that would improve Animal Crossing: New Horizons even further.
Nintendo did promised us at least three more years of updates coming to New Horizons so hopefully we will be seeing at least some of these features in the game one day!
General Island-Related Features To Improve Gameplay
- Having two separate options when terraforming (build and destroy) to save so much time, effort and frustration,
and lessen the chance of a Switch console being yeeted out of a window. - Campers being able to roam around your island when visiting
- Having more items on sale in Nook’s Cranny
- Not being followed around by Mabel and the Nooklings when browsing in their shops (social distancing is a thing guys! Don’t make me get my yard stick!) ๐
- Allow bridges and inclines to be built the same day
- Return of the
Jediever so slightly creepy gyroids. - An island planner (like the ones online) that make laying paths, terraforming, relocating things, etc, easier
- Being able to relocate the town square. Many players have unfortunately ended up with theirs very close to the airport. However, that’s not to say you can’t work around this. As these awesome island entrances demonstrate:
Features From New Leaf That Would Be Nice
- Being able to swim in the sea (and look around underwater) ๐
- Furniture series such as the Mermaid Series, Princess Series, various Sanrio sets, etc. ๐
- The introduction of more shops. I miss GracieGrace‘s furniture and clothing, as well as Leif’s gardening store ๐ญ
- Minigames/multiplayer minigames like on the New Leaf island tours
- Animals popping over to your house, or scheduling times to come and visit
- The return of the dream suite, or introducing a similar feature
Features From Pocket Camp That Would Be Nice
- The addition of cute and quirky hairstyles and wigs from Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp
- The addition of cool items from Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. For example the cute tents, swings, ferris wheel, treehouse etc.
- Animals being able to chill in pools, play on things, and interact with more items like they can in Pocket Camp
Characters From Previous Games That Need To Return
- Pete (
so I can shoot him down with a slingshot muahaha) - Tortimer (and his minigames)
- Brewster (and The Roost)
- Katrina
- Pascal
Kapp’n- Phyllis. (She is my spirit animal)
Features Regarding Visiting NPC’s
- A genie’s lamp to trap Wisp the absolute pest in
- Map markers to show where islanders and NPC’s are located on your island. (Celeste deserves to be featured in the Guiness World Records for best at hide and seek).
- The ability to use Mom’s tissues to wipe Daisy-Mae’s snotty nose
- A GPS ankle tracker for Gulliver (please!)
- Bail Redd out of jail so he actually visits my island again
Residents
- The option to muzzle islanders who sing for two hours straight. JK. Kinda..
- New dialogue for characters, as it can be quite repetitive
- Give the animals a bit more personality
- Getting more requests from animals, and receiving more interesting tasks
- Allowing more villagers to inhabit your island. There’s just too many cute ones! Fans have suggested 12-15 would be a reasonable amount.
- Having animals remember you if they leave and then move back in
- BRING BACK THE SAVAGERY
Events
- Bringing back the flower fest
- Reintroducing the flea market
- Reinstating Valentine’s Day
- Carrying on the tradition of fireworks shows
- Bringing back Leif’s Weeding Day and the Flower Set furniture rewards
Isabelle – (Yes she gets her own section ๐)
- The ability to
sack Isabellemake Isabelle use a swear jar, or rather, a ‘no-one-cares-that-my-new-magazine-arrived-or-that-I-found-a-missing-sock’ jar. - Have announcements from Isabelle when travelling merchants and special NPC’s such as Flick, Saharah, and Redd (when he does..๐ ) are visiting
- Apart from news-that-isn’t-news, and the occasional announcement, Isabelle doesn’t really do a lot. Somebody give that poor doggo a purpose!
Features That Would Save Players Time And Effort
- The ability to batch craft items
- Being able to bulk buy items such as customization kits
- Purchasing multiple items at once in the Able Sisters’ changing room
- Stronger tool durability, or at least making golden tools indestructible like in previous Animal Crossing games
- Being able to order more than 5 items from the shopping catalogue each day (I’m a shopaholic okay?!)
- Being able to rotate the camera 360ยฐ
- Having a bank card to use when shopping to avoid having to withdraw bells from the ATM in Residents Services
Storage & Space
- More storage space in your character’s home
- Being able to store DIY materials in workbenches to save on storage space
- Being able to store clothing and accessories in wardrobes to also save on storage space
- The ability the access your storage when outside of your home
- Being able to put flowers (stems) in storage. You can put three monster statues, a teacup ride, three jungle gyms, two oarfish and a shark in storage, but heaven forbid you try to store one white cosmos plant
- MORE DESIGN SLOTS!!
- Bigger side (and back) rooms in your house
DIY Recipes
Being able to slap that duplicate DIY recipe out of an animal’s hand when they force you to take it. Kindly being able to decline duplicate DIY recipes offered by crafting animals.- Actually being able to put DIY recipes in your storage
- Or introducing a storage box (or something similar) to store DIY recipes
- More frequent balloon presents and message bottles containing DIY recipes
Fun Features
- A museum gift shop (as has been hinted)
- A Nintendo app to link to the game that tracks steps (like the 3DS pedometer), and then rewards players with in-game items for exercising. (Two
owlsbirds with one stone!). - A feature that allows players to cook! (
all of the darn Sea Bass) - I wanna be able to kick the soccer ball and move about with it.. ๐ฅบ
- Being able to do things like play minigames on the switch console items
- The ability to participate in activities that islanders can do. For example, yoga, weight-lighting, tea-drinking in the square, dangerously running around with sticks in my hands, etc. Just the normal stuff ๐
Decor-related Features
- Being able to place rugs outside in order to save design slots for picnic blankets
- The ability to decorate the interior and exterior of islanders’ houses
- Custom paths making pattering noises like the other paths
- Being able to make and design public buildings like in Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer
- The ability to place items at an angle
- More bridge and incline designs to choose from
Multiplayer, Dodo Airlines & Glitches
- Improved, reliable, online gameplay with faster travel and less oopsies (we do pay for it with Switch Online after all)
- The option to
tie Orville’s beak togetherskip/speed through the chitter chatter when travelling with Dodo Airlines - Being able to open and close your gates remotely. It’s a pain when you forget to close them and then can’t terraform until you trek to the airport
- The ability to hop from one island to another without having to fly back to your island first
- Less glitches
Whilst it’s almost definite that not all of these features will be implemented, it would be fantastic if even a few of them were.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons couldn’t have released at a better time. I know for me personally, its delayed release was a blessing in disguise. The game has facilitated online friendships with like-minded people (and therefore lessened loneliness) and been a wholesome distraction during these difficult times.
But these are just ways in which the game has helped me. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has helped people cope with so many other disappointments. For example, with many weddings having been cancelled, gamers have been creating virtual wedding ceremonies instead, something which is now considerably easier with Reese and Cyrus’s new wedding season furniture this month.
Students with postponed graduation ceremonies have been holding their very own, in-game birthday parties are now a common occurrence, and Black Lives Matter Designs are being made and shared so that players can still show support and solidarity. We are now in June (this year has flown!), which means that it’s finally Pride month!
Celebrate Pride in Animal Crossing New Horizons!
With Pride events being cancelled/disrupted, or being a very different experience from what most are used to, you may have sadly decided to give Pride a miss this year. Wands are cool items exclusive to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. They allow players to instantly change into pre-assembled outfits with, well, the swish of a wand. The Star Wand recipe is the wand recipe that players are most likely to first obtain. All wands require star fragments to craft them. In order to learn more about obtaining the Star Wand recipe and obtaining star fragments, check out this article here. However, the Star Wand isn’t the only wand players can get their hands on. There are a whole bunch of cute and cool wands in the game waiting to be discovered. And so, here’s how to get all wands in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. ๐
Star Wand
Celeste will give you the recipe for this wand the very first time you meet her. It requires 3x star fragments and 1x large star fragment to craft.
Bamboo Wand
The Bamboo Wand recipe can be found during spring either in a message in a bottle, or in a balloon present. Alternatively, players acquire it as a gift from another resident. It will require 3x star fragments and 6x young spring bamboo pieces to craft. You can sometimes find a bamboo island and collect bamboo resources from it when using a Nook Miles Ticket to go on a mystery tour.
Cherry-Blossom Wand
Again, the Cherry-Blossom Wand recipe is exclusive to spring. Or rather, cherry blossom season during spring to be more precise. Like the Bamboo Wand, the recipe can be found either in a message in a bottle, or in a balloon present. Or alternatively, as a gift from another resident. You will need 3x star fragments and 3x cherry blossom petals to craft it.
Bunny Day Wand
The Bunny Day Wand recipe can be acquired from Zipper on Bunny Day once you have crafted all of the bunny day items. For more on this, click here. The recipe necessitates 3x star fragments and a nice and 1x creepy Wobbling Zipper Toy to craft.
Wand
This simply named ‘Wand’ looks like it came straight out of a Harry Potter film. So for all you Potterheads, this one is a must have.
The Wand recipe can be given to players randomly by talking to Celeste when she visits. It requires 2x star fragments to craft.
Top Tip: Combine it with a graduation gown, round specs, black trousers and shoes, and you’re a wizard Harry!
Tree-Branch Wand
The Tree Branch Wand recipe can be given to players randomly by talking to Celeste when she visits. It requires 3x star fragments and 5x tree branches to craft.
Mums Wand
The Mums Wand recipe can be given to players randomly by talking to Celeste when she visits. It requires 3x star fragments and 1x yellow mum flower to craft.
Cosmos Wand
The Cosmos Wand recipe can be given to players randomly by talking to Celeste when she visits. It requires 3x star fragments and 1x white cosmos to craft.
Lily Wand
The Lily Wand recipe can be given to players randomly by talking to Celeste when she visits. It requires 3x star fragments and 1x white lily to craft.
Hyacinth Wand
The Hyacinth Wand recipe can be given to players randomly by talking to Celeste when she visits. It requires 3x star fragments and 1x pink hyacinth to craft.
Rose Wand
The Rose Wand recipe can be given to players randomly by talking to Celeste when she visits. It requires 3x star fragments and 1x red rose to craft.
Pansy Wand
The Pansy Wand recipe can be given to players randomly by talking to Celeste when she visits. It requires 3x star fragments and 1x yellow pansy to craft.
Tulip Wand
The Tulip Wand recipe can be given to players randomly by talking to Celeste when she visits. It requires 3x star fragments and 1x red tulip to craft.
Windflower Wand
The Windflower Wand recipe can be given to players randomly by talking to Celeste when she visits. It requires 3x star fragments and 1x orange windflower to craft.
Mushroom Wand
The Mushroom Wand recipe can only be found during fall. Like the Bamboo Wand, the recipe can be found either in a message in a bottle, or in a balloon present. Or alternatively, can be received as a gift from another resident. You will need 3x star fragments and 3x thin mushrooms to craft it.
As the Mushroom Wand looks uh, rather questionable, I personally prefer mine customized to the red and white version ๐
Shell Wand
The Shell Wand recipe can be given to players randomly by talking to Celeste when she visits. It requires 3x star fragments and 3x summer shells to craft.
Ice Wand
The recipe for the Ice Wand can be obtained from Snowboy during winter. The crafting materials needed include 3x star fragments and 1x large snowflake.
Golden Wand
The Golden Wand recipe can be given to players randomly by talking to Celeste when she visits. It requires 3x star fragments and 2x gold nuggets to craft.
Iron Wand
The Iron Wand recipe (which literally looks like a metal pipe) can be given to players randomly by talking to Celeste when she visits. It requires 3x star fragments and 3x iron nuggets to craft.
Fish Wand
Players can receive a Fish Wand from C.J. during the Fishing Tourney. This wand is a physical item however, and not a recipe. It therefore doesn’t have a DIY and can’t be crafted.
Bug Wand
Like the Fish Wand, the Bug Wand is also a physical item and not a recipe. Players can receive the Bug Wand from Flick during the Bug-Off event.
Wedding Wand
The Wedding Wand recipe can be gifted from Cyrus during the Wedding Season event in June. If you help Reese and Cyrus take wedding anniversary photos at Photopia, you will be rewarded with wedding-themed items. The recipe for the wand requires 3x star fragments and 1x Wedding Flower Standย to craft.

There’s a chance that a lot of seriously cool features could be headed to New Horizons in the future. In a recent interview with CNET, Animal Crossing: New Horizons director, Aya Kyogoku, announced that the game would recieve updates for years to come. Whilst we don’t know the exact features we may have to look forward to, dataminers have some theories. One of these features, suggested by dataminer Ninja, is the return of the Dream Suite in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
What Is The Dream Suite?
The Dream Suite was a feature first introduced to the Animal Crossing franchise in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Run by a Tapir named Luna, the Dream Suite allowed you to visit and wander around other playersโ towns. You could either let Luna choose a random town for you to visit, or input a specific town’s Dream Address. Although you couldnโt access the shops in other towns, or bring back items, you could do pretty much anything else. If the mayor of a Dream Town had created their own custom designs and allowed others to access them, then you would be able to encounter walrus NPC Wendell during a dream in order to obtain them.
The Dream Suite was a nice addition to New Leaf in that it allowed players to share their towns with others, without the fear of vandalism. This is because any โtownโ you visit is just an uploaded representation of that particular town. Hence the ‘Dream’ theme.
Could It Return In New Horizons & And What Evidence Is There To Suggest This? (Possible spoiler alert)
Dataminer Ninji thinks that the Dream Suite could well make a return to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and explains why below. However, like she herself emphasises, the feature hasn’t been confirmed, and her findings shouldn’t be taken as conclusive proof.
Whether the Dream Suite will return, what it would look like, and how it would work are still unconfirmed. On the other hand, Ninji was spot on in predicting the return of Leif and Redd, and the Museum’s art gallery expansion. So fingers crossed!
