Remember the charm and beauty of the 2D Pokemon games? They were some of my favorites growing up, and the ones I return to when I want to replay a Pokemon game. And in recent years, there have been some great Pokemon-like creature collectors to come from indie developers like Coromon and Cassette Beasts. Now, there’s Fay Keeper (from developer Blue Gravity Games, creator of Little Sim World), an enchanting addition to the genre!

Step into the beautiful world of The Faylands, a kingdom full of ancient magic and fantastic creatures called Fays. You play as the Keeper and you have the unique ability to capture, train, and evolve Fays! So, set out on a nostalgic, but extraordinary adventure to master the art of Fay Keeping. Even conquer all the Colosseums and become the champion of The Faylands!

As you traverse gorgeous lands of Fay Keeper, discover and collect over a hundred different Fays. Each creature possesses unique abilities for you to utilize, and will become stronger with training. They’ll help you face other wild Fays so you can collect them, and you can even engage in a dynamic battle system against other Keepers with them. In each battle, you’ll need to manage your Fay’s energy, life, and status effects in order to come out victorious. Utilize your own status effects, weather, and elemental types for best results, too. Ultramorph your Fays into stronger versions of themselves during battle, and unleash Overcharge moves to really pack a punch and become the champion!

    Release Date

So, if you’ve been looking to return to that nostalgic 2D creature collector style, but with a fresh new face, this game is worth a Wishlist! Fay Keeper is planning to release on Steam, though there is no release date set just yet.

Creatures of Ava is a unique creature-saving game set in a fantastic alien world. Play as Vic, a young explorer who has set out to explore the planet named Ava. Alongside Tabitha, a researcher, you’ll confront an infection called “the withering” by the local race of Naam. The creatures of this beautiful world are being affected by this mysterious disease that’s depleting their populations, but you’re determined to remedy that.

Use a special flute to tame over 20 wild creatures, and get to know the Naam. Their customs are strange, but you’re determined to learn them. More importantly, you’ll explore four different biomes across the planet of Ava. While out and about, take in the beauty of the planet and help the native creatures heal from the withering. The non-aggressive combat mechanics in Creatures of Ava are meant for healing and not defeating, which makes this the perfect cozy exploration game. As you restore the planet you’ll come to understand what the infection is and how it came to be. But that’s only the first step to defeating the withering. You also need to undergo a change in perspective in order to truly understand how to stop the infection!

    Release Date

Creatures of Ava releases today on Steam and Xbox! There’s also a free demo available so you can try before you buy.

Developed by Humble Reeds, Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge is a super relaxing simulation game that focuses on restoring nature and collecting frogs. Step into the beautifully illustrated wetlands of your childhood that have been reduced to nearly nothing over time. Alongside an old childhood friend, work hard to restore the wetlands to their former glory and make it the perfect safe haven for all the adorable frogs!

    Restore the Wetlands

The first step in creating an inviting refuge for all the cute little frogs is restoring the wetlands. To do this, you need to work hard to dig ponds for the frogs to relax in. Each pond also attracts different kinds of bugs that you use to tame the different frogs. Plant native foliage to harvest berries, cattails, and other items from. Then, use those crops to create special products like jam to sell. You need money to turn the sanctuary into a fabulous refuge for frogs, after all!

    Collect Frogs

As you get the wetlands in Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge running, you’ll start seeing all kinds of different frogs show up. In fact, there are over 500 frogs to collect! You’ll encounter victulus, doblex, zebra, leopard, smoky, and sparkly types of frogs. Each kind also has a huge number of different color combinations to discover, too. There’s even some rare colors for you to unlock through the breeding mechanic! To breed frogs you pick which two frogs you want to breed together, then play a simple little tic-tac-toe game using one of a few different genetics. It’s a fun and engaging way to breed critters. Pick from the colors or the pattern to place on the board and play against the computer to see what kind of frog turns out!

Place different furniture options like beds, swings, or even a wheelbarrow in the sanctuary to attract more frogs. Feed bugs to the amphibian friends who show up to tame them and see them come back to visit. Even take pictures of them sitting comfortably in chairs, triumphantly standing on tables, or floating happily in the wetland ponds to build up your Frogdex more. As the refuge grows in size and success, there will even be new people who come around to help out with different services, like repainting furniture. So, you can set up the absolutely perfect refuge for your frog friends all the way down to the color of the toys and furniture!

    Kamaeru is currently on Sale!

You can find this lovely little creature collecting game on Steam now – where the game is currently on sale!! You can also pick Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge up for your Xbox or Nintendo Switch

Play as an intergalactic biologist that finds yourself stranded on a desolate planet in Critter Garden. You’ll use your science and gardening skills to restore life on this dusty planet by rebuilding ecosystems. Collect Critters and explore the planet to find the lost parts of your ship, too.

Critter Garden focuses on rebuilding the ecosystems of this desolate planet, and to do that you’ll need to take care of the Critters you find. Collect a variety of different Critters and balance their needs to keep them happy. If they’re happy, you can breed them to help restore their population on the planet! Each Critter has a specific diet and some of them will eat other Critters, while others will feel anxious with predators nearby. Even discover new Critters through evolution, too.

Breeding Critters isn’t all you’ll have to do, though. Critter Garden gives you tools to design ecosystems and seeds to plant in order to grow nine different biomes. Carefully manage space and resources in order to achieve success with your Critters’ happiness, of course. And as you progress through the game, you’ll get to play different minigames with your Critters to overcome obstacles. You’ll also slowly uncover the mystery of what happened to turn this planet into a wasteland.

    Release Date

Critter Garden is coming to Steam sometime soon. There is a free demo available right now, too!

Set off on an exciting adventure across an open world featuring 100 islands ripe for exploration in Moonstone Island! While adventure is a major aspect, this adorable game, developed by Studio Supersoft and published by Raw Fury, also includes a little bit of everything. It’s a creature-collecting life sim with fun deckbuilding and also unique puzzles and mazes, some farming, and resource collecting too. Get to know the locals, brew potions, collect Spirits, and work on completing your alchemy training!

Following the long-standing traditions of your village, you move to a sky island to complete your alchemy training. Pick from any of the 100 different islands to settle on. Then, you can start your new adventure by building a cozy home to call your own.

Use over 200 pieces of fun furniture and decor to make your home the coziest around. If you grab the Decorator’s Pass, you’ll gain access to all of the DLC cosmetics that have been added since launch, and more that are to be added later. Plus, you can start your own garden full of crops and flowers to use in your alchemy or to tame Spirits with.

Don’t forget to go talk to the cast of diverse and intriguing NPCs while you’re at it. You’ll become a valued member of the community and can even find someone to fall in love with and marry. You’ll not only experience a newly added wedding scene, but you can move in with your new spouse, too!

When you’re not spending your time at home, take the chance to go explore Moonstone Island. Travel via balloon, broom, and glider to see some unique biomes. Tame and befriend over 70 extraordinary Spirits (a roster that has only grown bigger since the PC launch) while you uncover secrets about your new sky-based home. Battle other Spirits with your own in engaging encounters where you’ll use a deck of cards as the battle system.

Solve unique mazes and puzzles, then battle against fun dungeon bosses, and earn rewards. Earn helpful new upgrades, useful loot, and island secrets. You can also take on the newly added INFINIDUNGEON for an unending challenge!

This game is perfect for the gamers who love Pokemon, Stardew Valley, and even Slay the Spire. The combination of collecting Spirits with a card-based battle system makes for a cozy, but engaging experience. Yet, it has that cozy no-rush aspect (with farming) like Stardew Valley has. So, complete your quests and explorations at your own pace with no time limits!

Moonstone Island is NOW AVAILABLE on Switch!

It’s now finally out on Nintendo Switch, so you’ll be able to take it wherever you go!

For PC players, you can also check it out on Steam.
