Sure, Animal Crossing can be wholesome. Initially aimed at children, and classed as a family-friendly game, why wouldn’t it be? However, if you look closely enough/play it enough, you might question this wholesomeness. The series can be surprisingly dark at times, sometimes directly and sometimes indirectly.
And so, here are my top 10 examples of times where Animal Crossing got dark. If you want more Animal Crossing fun, check out our 10 Examples of Absolute Savagery in Animal Crossing.
Have you ever experienced the darker side of Animal Crossing? If so, let us know in the comments.

The amount of insults and passive-aggressive comments that can be found within Animal Crossing games is pretty surprising, considering that the franchise is marketed mostly at children (although all of us don’t care ????).
The older Animal Crossing games are especially notorious for rude and insulting characters. While recent Animal Crossing games have seen ‘levels of savagery toned down’, the games still contain plenty of banter, emotions, and insults to keep game play interesting.
Here are ten examples that addequately demonstrate just how savage a seemingly cute and innocent game can be.

[dropcap]P[/dropcap]rofessor Layton And The Curious Village was initially released by Level-5 for Nintendo DS in Japan in 2007. Fast forward to 11 years later, and Layton fans can play a remastered HD version of the enigmatic game on either iOS or Android.
The game features the gentlemanly Professor Hershel Layton, a puzzle-loving archaeologist, and his young assistant Luke Triton, an easily nettled boy with a huge appetite and an ability to talk to animals.
The first game has the duo searching on behalf of a wealthy widow for an elusive artefact supposedly hidden by her late husband, the Baron. Whoever finds the artefact will inherit the Baron’s immense wealth.
With a beautiful animation style synonymous of Level-5, captivating music and plenty of suspense and emotion, the game remains entertaining despite its age, hence why a remake was made.
The trailer for the polished puzzle game can be watched below.

[dropcap]P[/dropcap]icontier is an upcoming pixel art-stylized miniscape RPG. The game’s retro 2D art style, alongside its life simulation elements, make it comparable to Stardew Valley and the original Harvest Moon games.
Picontier is designed by indie label SKIPMORE, who are best known for their Fairune and Drancia series titles. It is being published by Flyhigh Works Co., a company established in 2011 that specializes in localizing Japanese, English and Chinese titles.
It has recently been announced that the PC version of the game will be released via Steam this winter. Whilst FlyHigh works did not mention other platforms in their recent broadcast, the game has previously been announced for PS4, Switch, and 3DS.
Picontier is a mini RPG game that allows players to enjoy slow-living on a whimsical island after being washed ashore. Its life simulation elements include farming, crafting, fishing, and mining. Like Stardew Valley, the game also appeals to the more adventurous of gamers by offering excitement. In this instance, players can journey to the dungeons to fight monsters. Additionally, the game contains a charming story and a variety of strange island creatures to communicate with. The game therefore seems to tick all the boxes where depth is concerned.

[dropcap]L[/dropcap]evel-5 already confirmed a Yo-Kai Watch 4 for Switch back in April, with a game trailer set to be released on the 23rd June. However, Yo-Kai Watch fans will be surprised (but delighted) to hear that there will also be a Yo-Kai Watch 5. To celebrate the successful franchise’s fifth birthday, a Yo-Kai Watch 5th Anniversary event will take place on June 27th. More information about the game will be revealed in a special live YouTube broadcast at 12:00 JST (on the 27th June).
Level-5 have announced that ‘basically’ all of their future main titles are coming to Switch. Their mission being to transition what they have created for the 3DS to the Switch. This means that Yo-Kai Watch 5 will almost definitely be released for Switch, in addition to the confirmed Yo-Kai Watch 4 and Layton’s Mystery Journey port (which includes extra DX). We’re also hopeful that The Snack World, and Inazuma Eleven: Balance of Ares will get a western release, and that Ni No Kuni II could get a port also.
