[dropcap]S[/dropcap]ince the first day Nintendo introduced the Nintendo Switch, the console was advertised to feature all sorts of way to play with it. Table top mode, TV mode and on the go. Surprisingly Mario Kart 8 comes with a weird controller restriction.
While you can still use different variations, like the pro controller, single joy-con or double joy-con using the grip, there is a restriction in Wireless Play mode. In the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe split-screen players wont be able to use a full pair of joy-con controllers. Because of this limitation players will only be able to use a single joy-con and/or two Pro Controllers.
While this may be a rare scenario, it is odd this restriction even exists. However you can still play with another player using the two joy-cons. Taking a look at the Nintendo Switch help page gives some insight into why Mario kart 8 Deluxe comes with this limitation. “Up to eight wireless controllers can be connected to the console,” according to the controller pairing page. “However, the maximum number of controllers that can be connected will vary depending on the type of controllers and features that are used.”

That likely means some form of sharing in bandwidth/antenna or something similar for the wireless connection to other Switches and the controllers. To reduce latency in the game they are using controller “slots” to enhance the communications.
