Mario Kart Tour is the first mobile game based on the popular racing franchise, in fact it has never been available on a non dedicated Nintendo system before. The big N was recruiting beta testers for the game and as the sign-ups came to an end, the beta was finally kicked off yesterday.
With the Mario Kart Tour Beta in full swing, we received a lot of new information and even a gameplay video showing of some fast paced racing. The kart racer is played in portrait mode and just like in Mario Run, players can enjoy the game one handed, as acceleration and drifting is automatic by default, however a pro mode can be enabled in which you gain more control over your driving style.
The games mechanics are very simple and adjusted to be played on the go. Players can swipe right and left to turn corners instead of maneuvering with drifts and skills like in mainline Mario Kart games.
Furthermore, players report that the game relies heavily on in-game purchases suggestion a “free to play” model, although the beta doesn’t let players purchase anything right now, it will be interesting to see what the final version of the game will offer in terms of microtransactions. Currently there are characters for sale that offer special boosts and abilities making it easier to win races.
Check out some of the Mario Kart Tour Beta footage below, keep in mind that everything we know so far is based on a closed beta, this means that things such as gameplay, in-app purchases and other aspects of the game can change drastically before the official release this summer.
