Dogs have definitely had their paws in the creation of many different games over the years. Be it the frisky little pups from Paw Patrol, or the daring and brave Red XIII from Finally Fantasy 7, canine presence has been paramount to the flow of many games’ stories throughout the years.
Most of us just can’t get enough of those little cuddly creatures, so here is a list of games that let you explore mans relationship with dog, and dog’s relationship with the rest of the world. Honestly it’s difficult to imagine a story that couldn’t be made better by the presence of a peppy pupper.
From the creator of the indie smash-hit “Wandersong”, Greg Lobanov, comes an RPG like we’ve never seen before. In Drawdog [working title], you play a doggo on a mission to bring color and art back into the world using only a giant paintbrush. Lobanov’s previous title, Wandersong, received a loving reception and created quite a buzz for it’s beautiful play-style and unique take on an art game. It appears that Drawdog will attempt to do the same, only this time for color instead of sound. More info.
In PHOGS!, you play as a doggie duo connected by your stretchy belly, and you must bark, bite and bounce your way through a puzzle filled world. You can then get some much needed R&R by doing a little lazy exploration through the Sleep World. Finally, you finish it all off with a chompy romp through Food World. More info.
In Best Friend Forever or BFF for short, you will find yourself living in the most pet friendly town on earth – Rainbow Bay. To The Rescue is, without a doubt, one of the cutest and most wholesome games currently in development. I mean, running your own dog shelter and helping those adorable puppers find forever homes! What’s not to love. Not to mention, part of the sales of the game go to helping real-world dog shelters. In a recent Tweet from the developers, it has been revealed that To The Rescue has gone through a bit of adjustment in the artistic department. Halloween is coming up and I love nothing more than to cozy up with some of my favorite video games and celebrate the holidays in my favorite virtual worlds. Decorating my environment or simply enjoying the festive time with my favorite game characters is just so much fun. Here are some of the spooky or not so spooky games I look forward to playing this Halloween season!
It has been 8 years that Animal Crossing New Leaf was released and I still pick it up frequently. Of course I am working hard to decorate my island in New Horizons, but New Leaf is still a lot of fun as well and I have yet to say goodbye to my old village on the 3DS.
The game features a really fun Halloween event where you can collect lollipops and various candy pieces from villagers in your town. You then have the choice to exchange these goodies with Jack who will be in your town on October 31st, Depending on what you hand over, you will get Spooky or Creepy furniture! Animal Crossing New Leaf is currently available on the Nintendo 3DS / 2DS.
Night in the Woods is an autumnal themed indie adventure game. Highly relatable to many, the game shows the crumbling former mining town of Possum Springs. After the protagonist, Mae Borowski drops out of college and returns to her hometown, she finds things as gloomy and hopeless as ever. But this time there’s something more. Strange and eery occurrences are happening. And there’s something in the woods. This charming game with beautiful music can be played on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows, Linux, Xbox One, Android, Macintosh operating systems, and iOS.
Nintendo announced during their Nintendo Direct at E3 2019 that Luigi’s Mansion 3 is coming to the Nintendo Switch on October 31st, 2019. Now a year after its initial release, Luigi receives a dream vacation package with Mario and friends to a luxurious hotel. Once there however, King Boo reveals everything had been a ploy and now everyone is captured! Each floor of the hotel is its own unique level but this time, you don’t have to do it alone!

The game is available to play on Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Linux, and Mac.
Costume Quest is a Halloween-themed party-based RPG game. The game is developed by Double Fine Productions and published by THQ. The player controls a kid who is out trick-or-treating with their twin sibling. The game was released on October 19th, 2010, and can be played on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Mac OS X, Linux, iOS, and Android. The game’s sequel, Costume Quest 2 was released on October 31st, 2014. You can check out Costume Quest and Costume Quest 2 on Steam for more details!
Little Nightmares is a stop-motion-esque game, with an environment uncomfortably reminiscent of one’s childhood nightmares. The game is a puzzle-platformer horror adventure game that utilizes imagery, empathy, and strange and bizarre encounters (as opposed to overused jump-scares) in order to evoke a sense of horror. With the PC version of the game garnering a score of 81/100, critics praised the game’s atmosphere, graphics, and audio.
Animal Crossing Pocket Camp is the mobile version of the much beloved Animal Crossing series. While it doesn’t offer the freedom of the console games, it still does a great job at delivering a super cute gaming experience. During the month of October there will be plenty of Halloween themed events with spooky furniture and decoration items that you can use to turn your campsite into the ultimate Halloween Haunted House.

The entrance to your island is the first thing that other players will see when visiting. Therefore if you want to leave a lasting impression and wow from the very start, it makes sense to make your entrance magnificent. If you’re unsure on how to go about this, why not use these awesome Animal Crossing: New Horizons entrances as inspiration.
Before you indulge yourself in the pure eye candy below, make sure you also take a peak at these stunning and just beyond precious design ideas on how to make the Able Sisters Shop look even cuter!
It can be daunting knowing where to start with any island renovations. It can also be a bit disheartening to see other people’s awesome creations and feel like your own island is lackluster in comparison (I’ve been there!).
However, don’t be disheartened, as ACNH isn’t meant to be stressful! (Although the Bunny Day festivities kinda were, so thanks, Nintendo…) 🐰🪓
But back on topic, if you’re dead (like Zipper will be if he ever sets foot on my island again) set on making your airport/island entrance look super cool, then these simple tips will heed you well. Be sure to take all the time you need, plan your island entrance in advance (see below for tools and tips to help), and most importantly, make sure that you do you! 😊
Planning is an important part of terraforming/landscaping your island. Therefore, like these awesome island maps shown below, you could definitely hand draw your island map, or use digital art software (which would make a nice memento). But it doesn’t even need to be that hard with this Google docs spreadsheet ACNH map creator 😀🗺️
If you are too busy hunting down that blasted bunny with an axe don’t have the time (or inclination) to hand-draw/create your entire island map, then don’t worry! A handy 3D ACNH island planner is available to download for free on itch.io.
Here you can try out terraforming ideas and get an idea of how they’ll look in 3D before committing to paying for that darn bridge, only to have to give Tom Nook more bells to demolish it, yet again! If you own a Chromebook like myself, you may be disappointed to know that the app is only avilable to download on Mac, Windows, and Linux operating systems. Although you can still use the planner in-browser whilst using a Chromebook, which I discovered AFTER using the below method…
You can also use the more simplistic in-browser Happy Island Designer planner here. Whilst unfortunately not 3D, the tool does allow you to plan your island beforehand, instead of getting stuck right in, only to realize that you don’t know where to start.
I found it quite handy to see roughly how my island would look, due to the ability to place trees, flowers, and buildings. Additionally, you can upload a photo or screenshot of your island map layout before starting, something which would’ve saved me a lot of time, had I known beforehand… (Man, I need to do my research)! 🙄 Here is my first attempt at using Happy Island Designer:
Below are some great videos with content ranging from tips on how to design your island entrance, to speed builds of more awesome examples to inspire you:

Autumn is nearly here, which means we can expect to see warm drinks, cold weather, and leaves beginning to fall from trees. However, leaves aren’t the only thing to drop over the next two months. Much more exciting than the dropping of leaves, is the dropping of these five wholesome games onto the Nintendo Switch in September and October.

Pode is a beautiful indie puzzle-adventure game that is inspired by Norwegian art and nature. The game features a rock called Bulder, and a falling star named Glo. The two characters work together in order to solve ancient puzzles. The digital version is already available from the Nintendo eShop for $24.99USD.

Sometimes it can be nice to pick up a new game just to try it out because it’s free. It can be even more fun to do so when you have a friend to share it with. And what easier way to share than to pick games that are either free, or cost next to nothing.
Well, Nintendo Switch actually offers a few games that aren’t costly, and are still super adorable and sharable with at least one friend. Here are some that I thought all my friends might enjoy, but there are a few more free multiplayer games for Switch on the Nintendo eShop that didn’t quite suit my tastes (i.e. violent, or simply not cute).
Growtopia is like what Terraria would be if it were actually cute. Build an entire world with your friends, with all kinds of different items. Fight an array of whacky baddies with cartable weapons and armor. Or simply chill back and build an entire city. It is up to you and your friends what you choose to do in this game of infinite possibilities. The game even allows you to play with up to 65 people in a single world. Growtopia is also currently available for free.
Super Kirby Clash is a simple yet cute entrance in the Kirby series. The games features a super basic formula of simply fighting many bosses to level up and get new weapons and items. A bit on the violent side for my taste, but it is hard to resist that adorable little pink puffball. Play with up to four friends and take on tons of tough bosses using many of the classic weapons from the series. The game is currently free to download.
Tetris 99 is the latest iteration in the Tetris series. For those who are unfamiliar, Tetris has you stacking different shaped puzzle pieces to complete horizontal lines of blocks. This time the game goes to a whole new level, pitting the player against 98 others in a battle royale to be the last puzzler in standing (so to speak). Its fast paced puzzle action that you can enjoy with your friends, and what’s better, it’s also currently free to download through the eShop.
Jump Rope Challenge is basically exactly what it sounds like. Sometimes it can be tough to get the exercise we need during these tough times, and this game offers you a great way to do just that. Join up with your friends and loved ones, grab the joy-cons, and get ready to jump. Enjoy watching the cute little on-screen counter as you jump your way to a high score. While this game is currently available to download for free, it will only remain that way unil September 30th, 2020.
Another great way to spend relaxing time with your friends is to share your artistic sides with each other. One might do this by playing an interactive coloring book on the Nintendo Switch. With 89 color options and 9 different tools to use, you and your friends will have a blast with the 62 wonderful drawings to color, as well as the whiteboard to truly unleash your creativity. Luckily, Coloring Book is also currently free to download from the Nintendo eShop.
Funbox Party is pretty basic little party game that has three different puzzle style game for you and your friends to compete in. In Up Up, avoid obstacles as you fly ever upward to reach the final goal first. In Dragon Escape, once again we are avoiding obstacles, but this time the stakes are higher as we are fleeing with the intention of not being eaten. In the final game, take on the role of a germ as you try to infect the intestines before your friends. Ewe. But fun. While Funbox Party is not free, it costs a mere $00.39 through the eShop.
Remember Line Rider? For those that don’t, Chalk Dash Carnival is game where you must draw a path through the world to reach your final destination. Your character will ride on the chalk line that you draw as the game goes on. Do crazy jumps and collect mad coin while trying to reach the end before your friends. It’s a fun, cool and kooky way to spend some chill time with your friends. Chalk Dash Carnival is currently available through the eShop for $00.85.
I hope you enjoy checking out these free games, and I hope you get a chance to play them with your friends! Have Fun!
